Are Septic Pumping and Cleaning the Same Thing?

You may search for septic pumping or septic cleaning, and both would return similar results. But when choosing your septic company they can mean very different things.

When you call for septic pumping, a company may come out and put their vacuum hose in your septic tank and suck out the liquids and some of the floating solids or sludge.  At Earl’s we go one step further and clean your septic tank to remove all the solids and sludge, even the sludge at the bottom of your tank.  A thorough cleaning means less frequent calls for septic service.

Do I Need My Septic Pumped?

There are a couple of telltale signs that your septic tank may need to be pumped.

  1. Sewage Backing Up – by far the worst of all situations, sewage backing up into your home. Sewage back ups can happen anywhere in your home’s drains, but can also be a sign your septic tank may be full
  2. Amazingly Beautiful Green Lawn – if the section of lawn over your leach field looks like it could win prizes compared to the rest of your lawn, you might need to have your septic pumped. More liquids are being displaced by solids and overloading your leach field with extra “grass food.”
  3.  Standing Water – If you tank is full of solids, the liquids still need a place to go, so keep an eye out for standing or pooling water.
  4. Odors – If you smell sewage or sulphorous odors, please give us a call. Your drains have vents to safely vent the sewage gases that build up but an impacted septic may worsen the situation
  5. Maintenance – It is recommended you have your septic tank cleaned on a regular basis. Typically every 3 to 5 years.

How Do I Locate My Septic Tank

There are a couple of methods that you can locate your septic tank yourself. You can look at your home’s “as built” drawing or other technical data from when your home was built, if available. You can also do a visual check in your yard. Look for lids or manhole covers. Still can locate your septic system? Give us a call and we can quickly locate it for you.

How Does Your Septic System Work?

Your septic system is independent wastewater treatment system. There are two main components in your home or businesses septic system. The first is the containment vessel or septic tank. This septic tank digests organic matter and separates solids from liquids. The fluid also known as effluent is then discharged into the second key component of your home’s drainage system, the leach field. Your leach field is a series of perforated pipes buried in a field that is designed to slowly release the effluent into your soil.
