Automatic Shut-Off Valves for Homes on Wells
Many Northern California homes outside city water rely on private wells, pressure tanks, booster systems, filtration equipment, or pump-house plumbing. Automatic water shut-off devices can often be installed on homes with wells, but the layout needs to be reviewed first.
For well customers, Earl's Plumbing checks where the main water line enters the home, where the pressure tank and filtration equipment are located, whether there is nearby power, whether Wi-Fi reaches the installation area, and whether the device placement protects the plumbing areas your insurance company is concerned about.
Well sediment matters. Flo by Moen devices include an inlet screen/strainer area that can become a maintenance issue if sediment or debris from a well system reaches the device. On well systems, filtration may be required before the Flo by Moen, such as a sediment filter or appropriate strainer, to help protect the device and reduce clogging issues.
If your insurance company is requiring a smart water shut-off device and your home is on a well, send us the insurance letter before the appointment if you have it. We can review the requirement, inspect the plumbing layout, provide a free quote, and install Flo by Moen or another compatible device when the system is a good fit.
Moen's Flo specifications note that if the device must be installed before filtration on a ground-source system, a wye strainer with a 100 mesh or finer screen and blow-down port is required, and the screen may need periodic maintenance. Moen Flo specifications

Pressure Tank Layout
Well systems may include a pressure tank, booster pump, filters, or treatment equipment. Device placement needs to make sense for the home's actual water path.
📶
Power & Wi-Fi Reach
Many smart shutoff systems need nearby power and Wi-Fi for full app alerts and remote control, which can be trickier near pump houses or exterior equipment.
🧪
Sediment & Filtration
Well water can carry sediment that may clog small screens or strainers. We review whether a sediment filter, wye strainer, or existing filtration setup is needed before the device.

Insurance Documentation
If the device is being installed for an insurance requirement, we help document the installation on Earl's letterhead with CSLB #772565.
